Should the Rock and Roll hall of fame change its name?

I mean ABBA, Michael Jackson and Madonna are in it, and they're not rock %26amp; roll, they're pop. And Lady Gaga's meat dress is being shown their, and shes not rock %26amp; roll either. A more appropriate name would be "Whatever Music is Popular and Mainstream Hall of Fame" or "Rock %26amp; Pop Hall of Fame"Should the Rock and Roll hall of fame change its name?
I love this question. It usually means, "Why does the R%26amp;R Hall of Fame have people in there I don't happen to like?"

Two points:

(1) If you actually read the induction criteria for the HOF you'd know that it's not about who rocks hardest, it's about influence and significance on the industry. R%26amp;R did not spring from a vacuum. It's roots are in pop, country, jazz, r%26amp;b, you name it. To say, X should be in there cuz they're "real rockers" but not the influences that made their music possible is really short-sighted,

(2) Do you even know what R%26amp;R is? The term was first used in Cleveland (which is why the HOF is there) by record exec Leo Mintz and DJ Alan Freed in the 50s (who, in the best rock tradition, was later charged with inciting a riot, accepting bribes from record companies and died an alcoholic). For Freed R%26amp;R was r%26amp;b flavoured dance music. The acts he showcased at his R%26amp;R Dance Parties, were people like Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, the Big Bopper, Chuck Berry and a bunch of others that, if you listened to them at all, you'd say well that's just pop. R%26amp;R has evolved and reinvented itself many times since then and, without all the acts you mentioned, it wouldn't be what it is today. If you don't care about that, fair enough. But that's what the R%26amp;RHOF is about, not your narrow taste in music.
The three acts you mention are among the biggest selling music acts in history:

ABBA - 375,000,000 (second biggest selling band, after the Beatles, also a pop band in the HOF)

Jackson - 750,000,000 (second biggest male vocalist, after Elvis Presely, also in the HOF)

Madonna - 300,000,000 (biggest selling female vocalist)

If you don't believe these acts influenced R%26amp;R, it may be time you moved out of your cave.Should the Rock and Roll hall of fame change its name?
The "We ignore Progressive Rock/Heavy Metal bands, induct some artists of a genre but ignore more qualified artists of same genre and have no set criteria for induction because WE don't know what are criteria are!"...Hall of Fame

A few bands that desperately need to be in:

Chicago-I mean really? Innovative, Popular, 35 Top 40 Hits

Moody Blues-Innovative,Popular, 13 Top 40 Hits

Rush-Synonomous with progressive Rock

Brook Benton-A lot of less qualified artists of his genre are in. I mean Percy Sledge has at most 2 songs that people know and he is in!
It shouldn't exist.

It's bullsh!t, like The Sex Pistols said. The Sex Pistols turning up and saying how crap it is was the highlight of that hall of crap.

Pretty much anything Rolling Stone does is rubbish. Their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, for example. How can Kanye West be even in the top ten thousand?! My dog's dry roasted sh!t must have more talent than him.Should the Rock and Roll hall of fame change its name?
I agree ... If they're going to have a Rock N' Roll Of Fame there should only be bands that are true Rock N' Roll like Led Zeppelin or Alice Cooper. They should have a separate Hall Of Fame for "Pop" talents
Note, except MiJac
Johnny Rotten did`nt even show up when the Pistols were inducted. I think that pretty much says it all.
it was never about the Rock N Roll :D

..ever seen how lame the event is? a bunch of snooty old rich people.
Yes,change it to, a bunch of idiots choosing who gets in.

I mean where's RUSH come on.
yup. i can't believe they are putting that meat dress there? WHY!!?? its pointless and dumb... ugh
